Chapter Twenty

Even though she knew Zach was giving a bullshit excuse, saying he was leaving to open his pub, she let him go. The truth was she knew when she did the background search that she was crossing a line. All she could do now was hope he would see why she had to do it and forgive her for invading his privacy.

In the meantime, she was supposed to meet Agent Blaese to discuss the case. For that, she needed more coffee.

Every time Jessie walked into the diner, the waitresses gave her a knowing smile. When she had asked Zach about it, he explained it was a small town and they all knew the story about how she’d tackled him. But today, Detective Moore and Officer Harvey turned to smile as well. She was pretty sure they knew more than just the tackle.

“Morning, officer, detective,” she said as she walked to the counter.

“Good morning, Agent Doyle. You look happy this morning,” Harvey said with a grin. “Any chance our boy Zach is responsible?”

Nick punched him in the shoulder. “Why you asking her that? Don’t be rude.”

Harvey’s hands flew to the air. “How’s that rude? I’m just asking if Zach is making her happy.”

Nick shook his head.

A redheaded woman came out from the back. “We all know damn well what you meant, Chase. I apologize for him,” the woman said to Jessie.

Harvey laughed. “How the hell did you hear that? You were in the back!”

The woman walked around the counter and up to the man and laid a kiss on his lips. “I can always hear you. Don’t forget that.”

Jessie laughed. “It’s fine. Yes, Zach makes me happy. I’m afraid he might be mad at me right now, but I hope to fix that.”

“Hi, I don’t think we’ve formally met. I’m Harmony.” The redhead was now standing next to Jessie with her hand extended.

“Jessie.”

“I know. I’ve heard so much about you. And Zach’s accent has come out quite a bit recently.” She smiled at her then walked behind the counter. “What can I get you?”

“Just a couple of coffees would be great. I’m meeting someone.”

Moore’s eyebrow arched.

“A co-worker,” she said.

Nick nodded, as if giving his approval.

“Should I expect this kind of questioning from everyone?” she asked.

After pouring coffee into two to-go cups, Harmony placed them on the counter. “It’s a small town, and everyone loves Zach. We’re all just looking out for him.”

Jessie wasn’t sure how to respond; thankfully, she didn’t have to.

“Two-fifty please,” Harmony finished with a smile.

Jessie’s eyes widened. “Total?”

Hell, you couldn’t get one coffee for that price in Seattle.

Harmony laughed. “Yes, total.”

After Jessie paid, she left the diner, heading toward the park where Blaese had agreed to meet. Walking down Main Street, she was struck by the beauty of the town. All the store fronts were decorated, and several red benches brought even more color to the downtown area. Everything about this place screamed storybook small town, and she couldn’t help but be drawn to it.

After a couple of blocks, she turned.
